Quote of the day: against pornification

In the end it is just the same old bullshit wrapped up in different packaging. There is nothing for women to celebrate in the pornification of our culture because ultimately all it does is reinforce the notion that a womans intrinsic worth lies in her ability to attract and please men. Real empowerment and self-esteem come from valuing our skills and achievements. From believing ourselves to be good and capable people who have a positive impact on the lives of others. There is no strength to be found in the commodification of our bodies.

    Amen to that.

I’m fascinated by the role language plays in pornification. I love that by phrasing something in terms of ‘choice’ and ‘liberation’ you can turn something that is patently not in the best interests of the advancement of women and make it appear feminist. It’s kind of clever when your own language is used against you.

Whenever I hear women say the words ‘but I feel so liberated’ I always ask ‘liberated from what’?

I was once invited to attend ‘Bobby’s Pole Dancing Studio’ with a ‘liberated’ friend. “It’s girls only and really athletic” she told me. Girls only? Reeeeeally? Well then, it must be feminist.

I have some friend’s trying to convince me to come to a men only pole dancing class. As far as smashing stereotypes go, I think it actually would be quite liberating…
