Ewww, put that away, children are looking!

I think most people have heard of the hullaballoo over Facebook’s ban on breastfeeding photos by now. If you haven’t, you can read about it here and here and there and everywhere.

As a member of a University ‘network’ on Facebook, I sometimes get invited to piss-ups (sorry, ‘Events’) held at Uni. The photo accompanying said invitations (which I always have to decline, ever-so-regretfully) have on more than one occasion been of a young woman’s g-string clad arse. There’s nothing like a little bit of adolescent misogyny to make me sad I’ve hit my thirties.

And there’s nothing like an outrageous double standard to make me grumpy on a Monday.

I can’t help but think that if some of those adolescent girls who drunkenly post photos of their barely-covered budding breasts on Facebook had been exposed to a few more images of empowered women unabashedly using their breasts to nourish babies, perhaps they’d appreciate their bodies a little more and treat themselves a little better. Or maybe not. But it’s a nice thought.
